Oxford Business Park employees take part in grueling challenge to raise money for charity
31 May 2010
Seven Harley Davidson employees, based at Oxford Business Park have raised over £5600 for HELP for HEROES charity by taking part in a sponsored ride across the country, culminating in a welcome home party at Oxford Business Park with family and friends. Harley Davidson, who are based at the park celebrated their success and helped to fundraise by giving away a range of prizes in a raffle.
The motorcyclists are aiming to raise £10,000 for HELP for HEROES. Harley-Davidson Europe employees Andy Shaw and Phil Harpley conceived the idea in January this year and have garnered a huge amount of support to date.
Andy, who has a son that has recently joined the armed forces, participated in the ride with six other riders. However, despite being a massive support from the outset, ex-serviceman Phil was unable to participate in the ride due to injuries that he sustained in a recent road traffic accident.
The other seven, with Phil's blessing, took the decision to continue with the ambitious 72-hour ride that will cover approximately 2,500 miles and the four corners of the UK mainland. The trip, which began at 10am on Friday 28 May, covered north, south, east and west, using the furthest point from the sea as the crossover point.
The riders visited Lands End and John O' Groats along the way as well as stopping to visit at least one HELP for HEROES support facility for wounded servicemen and women. The epic journey ended at 10am on Bank Holiday Monday 31 May at the Harley-Davidson building in Oxford where a small invitation only celebration was be held for friends, family and supporters.
A raffle to win a Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 motorcycle, a Nintendo Wii, a flat screen television and Ipods were also held at the event. People wishing to donate to the cause or to find out more should visit http://www.all4sendurance.co.uk
"We've been overwhelmed by the level of support so far," said Andy Shaw, "and it's fantastic to see the level of support that we have in the UK for our valuable armed forces. HELP for HEROES is a fantastic and worthy charity that provides practical support for wounded servicemen and women. The ride that we are undertaking in support of the charity is nothing in comparison to some of the situations that our armed forces face on a daily basis.”
